Remember that post when I said I’m not good at short stories? I’m still not. But I’m submitting them for anthologies. We’ll see what happens. By the time this posts, I should have submitted at least two stories, possibly three.
I don’t know if they’ll be accepted, but I figured it was worth trying. I’m not going to get any better if I don’t try and if I don’t push myself to write things out of my comfort zone. So that’s what I’m doing.
One of the stories is a fantasy story. It was one of two that I wrote as a possibility for the Sirens Benefit Anthology Witches and Warriors. The other story was I submitted for that anthology but I really liked this one. It needed a little more work, and it turned out to be longer than the submission limit for Witches and Warriors anyway.
Since then, I’ve revised and polished it. And then I found out 20 Books to 50K was doing a fantasy anthology. I want to write more fantasy – I have some in the project list. I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. But an anthology with this group could really increase my readership for other things as well.
I just don’t know if it’s good enough. But I won’t ever know if I don’t submit it.
The second anthology is much smaller. It’s a sci-fi anthology. I’m writing a new story for it based in my Starfall Station universe. It’s a bit tricky for a for a few reasons. The first of the three Starfall novels is about a third done. Unlike the Double Helix universe, this is traditional out in space, futuristic sci-fi. And then there’s the time setting for the story – in between the second and third books. So it’s going to be canon, and I’m going to have to keep track of it and what happens and where people are. Otherwise book two won’t lead into it and book three might not start in the right place.
The possible third anthology is about monsters in Hollywood. I have a couple of projects involving minor deities that are tied to specific places and concepts. Some of them are in Hollywood/Los Angeles and involved in the movie industry. Or I could use the skeleton crew idea that’s been percolating for a long time.
Hopefully writing and submitting these stories will motivate me to get the Double Helix stuff finished and I’ll be able to write some of the other stuff. There are more short stories in my project list too. I will get better at them. Practice, review, revise, submit, and repeat!
I’ll let you know what happens.
